RENEWING of business registration can soon be done at Bank Simpanan Nasional branches, bringing smiles to proprietors who no longer have to travel far to obtain their certificates.

For those staying far from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) offices, the move is most certainly welcome as it means time and money will be saved.

The initiative has been made possible following cooperation between SSM and BSN to help the business community.

The tie-up was announced by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at the launch of an outreach programme organised by SSM involving the Felda community at Felda Mayam, Bera, Pahang on April 23.

It was the first programme jointly held by SSM and Felda Mempaga region.

Since its implementation in 2006, the programme has provided the public with an opportunity to know SSM better as well as a better understanding of the agency's roles and functions.

Besides the Klang Valley, the programme is also held in other states, with the collaboration of the local authorities, local residents and public and private colleges and universities.

Other bodies involved include the Home Ministry and agencies under the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, such as the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia), Cooperative Commission of Malaysia, Bank Rakyat, Perbadanan Nasional Berhad and the Cooperative College of Malaysia.

BSNM, Celcom, Tekun and Mara also participated, exhibiting and promoting their products and services.

The outreach programme also serves as a gentle and kind reminder to businessmen who have yet to register their businesses with SSM to do so immediately.

Any form of trading or other activities with the purpose of getting profit must be registered with SSM.

Failure to do so is an offence under Section 12 (1) (a) Business Registration Act (PIA) 1956 which carries a fine not exceeding RM50,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

At the outreach programme, the public can register, renew or make amendments to their business registrations immediately at mobile counters set up by the commission.

This additional service is on top of the normal registration which can be done online at www.ssm.com.my

SSM chief executive officer Datuk Azmi Ariffin said the programme in Bera was the first involving the Felda community.

"This is a very good starting point as both parties collaborate towards the common goal of helping produce more entrepreneurs from the Felda community."

He said at every SSM outreach programme, a briefing on how to register and incorporate businesses would normally be held.

However, this time around, a briefing on interest schemes was also included.

"The aim is to educate the public on interest scheme and its connection to get rich-quick scheme or illegal investment scheme. Their better understanding of the matter can help them evaluate or participate in schemes which are legal business ventures."

The programme in Bera was special as some local businessmen from Felda participated by showcasing their products.

"It is hoped their participation will encourage others in Felda to become entrepreneurs."

Initially, SSM planned to invite more local businessmen to join in the programme but it was hindered by limited space.

Nevertheless, it plans to hold the programme on a bigger scale in future.
