JOHOR BARU: All passport holders can renew their travel documents online from next month.

Under the newly-introduced MyOnline Pasport renewal system, they only need to submit their renewal applications and payment, and upload their photographs. They may collect their passports two hours later at any Immigration office of their choice.

The facility was first introduced in the Klang Valley on May 1.

The system is expected to make applications for renewal easier, faster and more convenient.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said the process of fine-tuning the system was continuing.

He said among the problems which might crop up at the initial stage was unclear photographs being sent to the Immigration Department.

"The photograph must be taken not more than three months from the time of the application and no touch-up is allowed before it is sent to us.

"The passport-size photograph must come with a light blue backdrop. Polaroid pictures are not allowed.

"The department hopes the applicants will abide by the rules and regulations, as failure to do so may put them at risk of having their applications rejected and payments forfeited," he told the New Straits Times.

Payment may be made by credit card or direct debit from the applicant's bank account.

Applicants will have to state the Immigration office they would like to collect their passports from and no change of collection point is allowed once it is stated in the application form.

They will have to collect the passports themselves. They have to bring along their old passport and MyKad card for verification.

Alias said the system operated around the clock, allowing maximum flexibility for those applicants who could not make it to the Immigration office during working hours.

"Under the existing system, applicants must visit the Immigration office twice, once for submission and once for collection," he said.

"With the online renewal system, you only need to come once for collection."
